Club History

The Rotary Club of San Francisco West is the second Rotary club in the city of San Francisco. It was founded in 1984 as the Rotary Club of Stonestown, where we originally met, as a luncheon club. We serve the San Francisco community west of Twin Peaks.

We’re proud of our multicultural history. Club presidents have included natives of Sri Lanka and India; men and women; an African-American, and members of diverse religious faiths.

When Rotary was founded, it was for men only. The Rotary Club of San Francisco West is proud to claim among its past members one of the first ten women in the history of Rotary.

Interact, a Rotary program of high school clubs sponsored by Rotary clubs, is an international organization of service and social clubs for young people that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship and promotes international understanding and peace. (The name was created by combining the words international and action.) The Rotary Club of San Francisco West started the first Interact club in San Francisco in 1989 at Abraham Lincoln High School. The Lincoln Interact Club has been awarded best Interact club in district 5150 several times.

The Rotary Club of San Francisco West has won several best-in-the-district awards from Rotary District 5150, including best club, best bulletin, and best community project.
