Rotary International Club History Past Speakers Community Service International Service
These are just a few of the many community service projects of the Rotary Club of San Francisco West.
Starting in July 2003, we have donated a book to the San Francisco Public Library in honor of our weekly speakers.
Each year since approximately 1995, in partnership with Rita da Cascia, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West distributes Thanksgiving dinners at no charge to needy families in San Francisco. In 2007, we delivered meals to 40 families. Starting in 2006, we have held a special fundraiser earmarked for the Thanksgiving meal delivery, and to raise community awareness of the work of Rotary and our club.
In February 2008, we organized a blood drive with Blood Centers of the Pacific at the Sunset Recreation Center, generating blood donations from our members and the community.
The Rotary Club of San Francisco West is working with other organizations to assist the homeless, including through outreach and providing winter garments and to the homeless. We've also served at meal services for the homeless.
In 2007, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West partnered with Bayview Hunters Point Multipurpose Senior Services, Inc, Mary Kay, and individual Mary Kay beauty consultants to provide gift sets of hand and foot lotion, socks, and stuffed animals to low-income seniors who might otherwise not have received any Christmas or holiday season gift. We recruited members of the business community to donate and fund most of the gifts.
Periodically, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West volunteers at the Food Bank for three-hour sessions of sorting, boxing, and bagging food for distribution to the Food Bank’s many clients.
In 2006, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West participated in the annual cleanup of Ocean Beach in San Francisco.
Our Rotary Club members have read to children at the local Head Start center.
The Rotary Club of San Francisco West provided labor to improve the landscaping at the Booker T. Washington Community Services Center.
In 2001, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West organized the Westside Health Fair, with the cosponsorship of Mayor Willie Brown and the San Francisco Neighborhood Association. There were over forty providers of health service, including youth service, senior service, cancer screening, vision, dental health, chiropractic, herbal practitioners, massage therapists, and many more. Over 1500 members of the public attended, and no admission was charged.
Project Open Hand provides meal deliveries to persons with HIV/AIDS. Although Project Open Hand now relies on a paid crew to deliver meals, in the past when volunteers were used, the Rotary Club of San Francisco West had a weekly delivery route.
The Janet Pomeroy Center, formerly Recreation Center for the Handicapped, provides vocational and other services to disabled persons. The Rotary Club of San Francisco West has provided The Janet Pomeroy Center with financial support to modernize the office with a computer network, and $10,000 to benefit persons with brain injuries.
Rotarians from the Rotary Club of San Francisco West have planted rhododendrons and removed trash, weeds, and blackberry bushes from the Rhododendron Dell in Golden Gate Park.
We’ve managed a water station supplying water and energy drinks to the runners in the San Francisco Marathon.
